holiday bill is in and . . .
« on: July 03, 2012, 01:28:25 PM »
 . . . I was pleasantly surprised.
The most expensive dinner of the holiday was £57.
In general a good dinner for two (starter, main course, bottle of wine, mint tea and sometimes an aperetif and the occasional pud) in a beautiful setting was around £40 for two . . .
The same visa bill included three meals back here in Blighty (including an airport breakfast for £20 . . . £20!!!!) which were nowhere near as good yet cost a fair bit more.
Ok, you probably wouldn't do it every night of your life - or even every night of your holiday - but, personally, I think Kalkan restaurants are still very good value for eating out.

Couldn't agree more...still don't get it when people say its getting expensive.....what are they comparing it to ??? When you take in the whole ambiance of say a roof top restaraunt.....it has to great value for money..... :)

Yeah fair enough, but 'anywhere' in Turkey does not hold a candle to Kalkan...as everything in life, you get what you pay for......how much do you want to pay for a 3 course meal KC99  ???

I've heard you can get a jug of vodka and Red Bull for 15 tl in Marmaris.....not for me  8)

You gets what you pay for, simples  >:D

Onelove....can we assume that you have travelled widely in Turkey [or just to Marmaris]...there are lots of places on a par with Kalkan if you look  ;D

I've said this before, but I found Side much, much more expensive than Kalkan. The food was nowhere near as good and the choice I had as a veggie was Ottoman Casserole or.....Ottoman Casserole. Cocktails were around €14 in the bars around our apartments and after the high prices, and all the hassle we encountered, my boyfriend refused to return to Turkey! Luckily, I found Kalkan, twisted his arm, and he changed his opinion of Turkey. ;)

I've been holidaying all over Turkey since I was 10 and of course there are cheaper places, but not of the same standard. But you can eat cheaply in Kalkan. The first meal I had there (in 2007) was a veggie dish at Odak that cost about £2!

IMO it's not about cheap or expensive it's about value for money, the difference is how people perceive and calculate 'value'

I find Kalkan is still great value for money.
I have a very responsible position...

Agreed.  Visited Yalikavak near Bodrum around 3 years ago.  Couldn't buy a bottle of wine in any restaurant for less than 35/40 lira.  Food around the same price, no where near as much choice as in Kalkan and although it is compared to Kalkan IMO didn't come close.  Have visited many other places in Turkey and again nothing compares. Haven't return to any except Kalkan.

Yes we went to Yalikavak a couple of years ago and I agree - the quality of food didn't compare at all and the prices were just as steep if not steeper.

We tried Yalikavak three years ago too and had the same experience. Definitely no cheaper than Kalkan but nowhere near the same quality of food and the atmosphere just wasn't there for us. We met lots of people there who felt the same about Yalikavak as we do about Kalkan. Some of them had bought property there and had been going back for years. Didn't have the heart to tell them about Kalkan... ;D
