how do things work
« on: January 22, 2010, 06:50:54 PM »
Actual information on whats available and how to install things seems very difficult, I would like to install a telephone line into my villa, but am told that non residents can't have lines? does anyone no if this is true, and if its not where do I actually go to start to make this happen, also how long does it take, I am often only in Kalkan for a week can I start the process before I arrive.  I also want to install SKY, or is it called Digiturk are they different?? I need Chanel's on my TV and with the world cup looming would like to make sure I or guests can watch the matches, is this easy to do - where do I get it done and again how long does it all take.
I always seem to be after advise on this site, and people are very helpfull so fingers crossed I can get this sorted out as soon as possible.  Many thanks

Don't  know about you telephone i'm sure someone will be along...But as for your T.V..we have stayed in propertys in Kalkan where channels are sent via a Slingbox connected to your PC in the uk...Go into the dark grey searchbar at the top of EK page and click search..then enter the word slingbox..some older threads on this will come up including one for sky tv ;)
People Of Britain.. When your missus asks "Does my bum look big in this? Never say "Dunno your blocking the light."... just sayin ????

I would suggest you ask your estate agent for help in installing a telephone, you can also have internet access through the same line if you wish. You will have to pay for the service 12 months a year of course so may not be worth it for you. However, many, if not the majority of rental properties now offer this service so if you wish to be competitive when renting you may wish to consider it. Once you have a number allocated the service to install is very quick, just a couple of days (unlike the UK!).

There are a number of alternatives for TV access, we use digiturk and have regular english premier league games (with English commentary) shown. This is not the cheapest option however, and again must be paid 12 months a year, but as residents that's fine for us. There is no "Sky sports' as such unless you want a satellite dish the size of a house! Not an option for the majority of non resident owners. There is a satellite shop along the street between the IS Bank and the garden centre who offer a number of different packages and will install same / next day.

You may find that Kalkan Electronik is quite expensive for TV packages - do a comparative shop at Onal Electric where you will get a much better deal probably - I did. They are situated under the veterinary near to the ADA supermarket on the left going up the bank towards the Kas road.
If you just want basic TV with news channels, lifestyle and a few film channels look at Nilesat [the free to air version] you need a dish - a box and installation - is a really cheap pay once only option - no further costs

The Swan will be if they're not ;D ;D
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)
