'ow much
« on: March 24, 2010, 07:00:44 PM »
Interesting item on the MoneySavingExpert.com today

Strongest purchasing power on arrival. Here's the price of a basket of goods inc beers, water & meals, which costs £72.14 in the UK (Brighton), compiled by the Post Office at today's exchange rates (it can vary by city too - this was priced at tourist resorts):
Hungary (£37.40) Bulgaria (£39.52)  Thailand (£42.31) Spain (£45.26) Bali (£52.51) Kenya (£52.60) Malaysia (£57.71) Croatia (£63.46) Greece (£64.02) Egypt (£65.45)USA (£75.70) Turkey (£76.08)

I wonder which resort they did it at in Turkey?

Hi
Hard to believe! Just back from Thailand. Not cheap at all in Koh Samui or Bangkok. Quality of food far better in Kalkan and will never complain about the price of Angora again. Cheapest wine in restaurants was £30 and it was awful!!

Well if that's true, there'll be less money for bags this year.. :(
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

We keep hearing about the price increases in turkey this year,is it possible for someone who is a resident or holidaying in Kalkan at the moment to do a run down on prices in the bars and supermarkets ? or maybe a update on things they have seen increase in price compared to last year.
Cheers ( just thinking about my Efes budget  ;D)

........and it's very expensive here in Kalkan as well
When I came here 5 years ago gas [for the car] was 1.28TL and it is now 2.08 TL a litre
Isn't Turkey now the most expensive country for fuel in Europe...I think that I read somewhere
This will drive the price of everything up , as everything in Turkey seems to move by road

I'm always sceptical of these articles. You just have to be savvy and compare shops/prices.
Which shop was the £72 basket from? that could be for premium brands where as if you buy supermarket basic ranges it might be half that price.  :-\

Will be interesting to know about real Kalkan prices once high season starts. We are staying in an apt this time so won't need to eat out every night like we have done previously (not sure that's such a good thing though  ;))

Like Roxie, I too am just back from Thailand and it wasn't anywhere near as cheap as I expected,  especially for meals and drinks out! Taxis and transport however were amazing value.

Don't anyone kid yourself,  Mince is now 25tl a kilo and petrol is 3.87tl a litre kevincat, and of course with general shopping in the UK or Europe there are always 3 for 2s or bargains to be had, not so in Turkey and especially kalkan, where everything is top dollar, price rises are constant here, I hate to think what the prices'll be like in the summer
never buy a house anywhere without an independent surveyors report

And one of my guests stood in the butcher's last year and told him how cheap his chicken breasts were compared to uk. Tried to shut her up, but she kept going.
I'd like to apologise personally for the hike in meat prices this year.

I think that's about it rockykalamar fruit and vegetables, the only thing that is cheaper and most of those are grown with all sorts of nasty chemicals and hormones, very few are organic as is so often rumoured, and again in kalkan there is no choice like the UK to pay the extra and get organic. O yeh and of course rent is cheaper.
