Telephone calls
« on: May 26, 2009, 09:14:20 PM »
Hi all. Just wondered about the best way(cheapest!) to make phone calls back to the UK, having used the mobile last year and found the cost of a few short calls back home was a small fortune.

Is it cheaper to buy one of those phone cards from a newsagent or even get one in the UK and take it with us?

Thanks Del.

I believe the telephones at the PTT are by far the most cost effective means of making a call.

As for mobiles, if you are on Vodafone unfortunately Vodafone passport does not apply to Turkey so you will be paying about £1.86 per minute. 3, Orange and T Mobile are about £1.30 a minute however O2, if you have International Traveller Service (ITS) on your price plan reduces the call costs to 86p per minute  :) ITS is free on the £35 per month tariffs or a couple of quid for a month.

Have a great time  :D

The PTT is the cheapest
Go to the far end of the place and use the phone - then go to the nearest counter and pay the guy there
Don''t take a ticket from the machine - don''t queue - just use the phone and then pay

The ''wooden shed'' across the road from BBQ & Kaya and alongside ''Omar Sharif''s brother'' is the cheapest place we have found for phonecalls as it is done through their computer.

The cheapest way of making calls back to the uk is by skype (or similar VOIP service). You can access this using a computer at many Internet cafes or using WiFi if you have a laptop or suitable mobile phone.  Cost is free to another skype user, around 3p per min to a landline and around 15p per min to a mobile.

Whether it is worth the effort of getting a skype mobile really depends on how many call you want to make, and whether you mind going to the PTT or an internet cafe to make calls (as both are pretty cheap).
