Setting up a website
« on: January 14, 2009, 12:00:16 AM »
Hi I wondered if anyone could give some advice on how to set up your own website?  I noticed that on some sites such as Owners Direct and Holiday Lettings (and EK) that there is an option to go to the owners personal website.  Is it difficult to set this up and can you do it yourself or do you need a website designer or company to do it for you?  Also how do you get an actual website address?  Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Hi KalkanBelle,

Im sure you just read my mind as EnjoyKalkan is going to be offering domain registration and hosting on our servers from next month to compliment the accommodation section.

For £19.99 per year you would get

- your own domain name of your choice subject to availability eg "www.my kalkan villa is nice .com"
- you own email address eg "bookings@my kalkan villa is nice .com"
- space to upload your webpage
- unlimited bandwidth

Let me know if your interested and I can sort this out for you.

If you wish to go with other companies some suggestions are

Fasthosts (www.fasthosts.co.uk) @ £4.99 per month
1 and 1 (www.1and1.co.uk) @ £4.99 per month

although you will find them advertising in most magazines - do make sure that you check they do not charge for your bandwidth as this can become costly if you site grows.

As for the process of creating a website this varies from very simple, eg using a software package to create it for you to very complicated (like EK!) using CSS and there is no fixed price as prices to vary massively. For the PC some people rave about the free package called NVU and for Macintosh iWeb is very simple. I have also heard some positive reports about MrSite which is an online web page designer.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask anything, very good topic by the way!

As a Web Designer I think Jon''s hosting offer is going to be an excellent addition to the EK website for owners wanting to upload their own data. There are many ISP''s out there offering web space with broadband services, but a lot of these have a bandwidth restriction as Jon mentions. No bandwidth restrictions on EK make this extremely good value.
With regard to website creation software there are some good, simple to use packages available. Some free, some cheap and some very expensive. If members want more information on these packages let me know and I''ll post a list up on here for you.
For those of you already doing it the only advice I''ll give is keep it up to date. Nobody likes to see out of date info on the web. It''s like picking up a 3 day old newspaper.

I thought like Jon this would be a good topic, but it seems we were wrong. It is very quiet out there.

As someone contemplating setting up a website for our villa, it would be good to have a list web design packages.  I''m sure in common with many EnjoyKalkaners, ease of use and jargon free are high on my list of desirable features.  Also a free/low-cost product would be preferred.  So Brooksie, please post your list.  You now know it will be opened by at least one person.

Hi Kalkanbelle,

I''m am not quite sure what you are asking ( I was never the brightest kid at school ! ) But if it is about you having a website made for your villa, I can recommend a local lad in Kalkan ( speaks and writes perfect English ) who made ours for us, People who understand these things all agreed that we only paid about 40/50% of what you would be looking to pay in the UK....If you would like more info, please send me a PM.....good luck

Regards KD.

Great list Brooksie,

Another option is also to look at CMS packages, when the EK service goes live next month there will also be the ability for mySQL database creation  ;)

Hi Brooksie - I downloaded the free webplus but there doesn''t appear to be an online tutorial taking you through all the different steps to setting up your own website?  I could only find a PDF booklet to download but couldn''t make head or tail of it?  I managed to get a template but didn''t know what to do from there (you might have guessed by now that I am not very computer literate)!  Is there a website that takes you through all the steps and guides you from scratch so that you can just insert your own info, photos and prices i.e and idiot proof guide to designing your own website?  HELP! The free web creation software doesn''t give you a proper manual or a help menu. The version you downloaded can be upgraded for £9.99. That gives you help files and a manual. The other alternative is to download a free ready made template from the web that makes life easier. If you want some help finding the sites let me know.

There is an announcement coming soon on EK about step by step web page creation, if you''re not desperate to get your pages up on the web then wait for the EK news. :)
