Point to Point Internet
« on: April 22, 2015, 02:49:59 PM »
Apparently over 110 people have hooked up to this system in Kalkan. It would be worth gauging feedback from any users out there. Your feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm just about to be hooked up. It's less than half the previous price I was paying.

We had the Point to Point installed at Easter and it is really fast and we are more than pleased,  as you say Christina, it's a really good price too, Bob did a speed test and it came out at 8mb/s! whatever that means, not being a techie!!

Martyn - would be interested in knowing how it would work in an apartment block...could just 1 person buy it and would it reach the others or would a booster be necessary..??

Cheers!

Felicity/Martin, we had point to point installed in February. Essentially it works on the same principle as regular broadband, viz you still need a modem, it's just that the signal comes via a receiver pointed at Receps aerial rather than a telephone cable. The receiver needs to have sight of the aerial and is connected to the modem by cable. Once it gets to your modem you can use wifi just as you do with a regular connection. So in theory as long as the other apartments are within wifi range (you should know that from your existing connection) and you share the p/w they can receive the signal. Obviously with the limitations of wifi range the speed will drop off drastically the further you are away from your modem.
We are more than satisfied so far. Speed is about the same as old cable connection (7-8mbs), and cost is much less, 50ytl per month on a need basis. So if you only want 6 months in a year that's all you pay for.

A few others points to thro in

You will need to factor in set up costs - circa 300TL. Also both receiver and modem require a power source. This may be an issue if you are sharing as electricic will need to be left on and access to router to re-boot if required.

While I have only had this system for a few days it appears to be reliable with decent download speeds.

Finally, you need to sign a Contract with Recep for the monthly charge. In typical Turkish fashion is has about 100 pages of Turkish jargon!!

Has anyone had the contract translated or does Recep get your property if you fail to pay :0 - also, partially related, I saw that someone mention their IPTV subscription provider had disappeared and they no longer had the service paid for. I am assuming they must have sourced it from someone other than Recep. Has anyone who has IPTV services from Recep had any issues at all?

We have had the point to point internet a few days and must say we are very pleased with speed etc. and of course price - we paid 450TL up front for connection and 4 months usage. The benefit is that no payment needed if we are not here. Recep and his assistant had us up and running in about an hour. I think it is 250TL for initial installation and 50TL per month; a lot cheaper than our wired connection.

With ADSL you get 13-14 Mbits/s and you can run 3 computers and 2 cell phones simultaneously on wifi.  It also covers the entire villa and out across the pool area.  We pay TL 59.75 / month, but it is an annual contract.

Yes not bad Cosetta. However I was paying 960tl a year with ttnet (unlimited downloads). I now pay 350tl (for the 7 months I only need). The speed with ttnet was never better than 8mbit, normally 6-7.
Wifi range is exactly the same with point to point, (upstairs, downstairs, pool, across the road etc) it uses the same modem. And similarly you can still run a number of computers, phones, iPads etc. We are currently simultaneously using 2 iPads and watching UK TV via slingbox with no drop off of performance.

That's good, I thought someone had said that the bandwidth on ptp was low.  Actually, I used to have 8mb from ttnet but moved up to unlimited 16Mb (which never surpasses 14).  They are also installing fiber optic in town which is much faster but it isn't available yet in our area.  6mb is now on offer for TL39 but as you say, you have to have an annual contract.  It looks like they raised this year's prices but we still have it for our contractual price of 59.

You are lucky actually. They put mine up to 80tl. The advertised rate is 16mb, unlimited, but we never got better than 8mb. Hence my move to point to point. Bandwidth comparable to ttnet.
