Exchange sterling in UK or Kalkan?
« on: May 04, 2011, 11:07:51 AM »
Hi Guy's

First time on here and looking forward to our first visit to Kalkan towards the end of June.

I was wondering whether I will get a better exchange rate in Kalkan or in the UK through somewhere such as Travelex or M&S? Currently I can get 2.44 to the £sterling (no commission or other fee's etc) . Do you know what the rates in Kalkan are are do they charge commission / other fee's?

Many Thanks.

Welcome, usually you will get a better rate in Kalkan, if you look at KTLN http://kalkan.turkishlocalnews.com/portal/ they put current exchange rates in the town on their home page.
2.44 without commission is good though and by the time you get to Kalkan things could have changed, it's a hard call as up untill recently the rate was in the region of 2.3 so anything over 2.4 is happy days!
Some of the financial wizzards may be able to tell you of the likelihood of the rates either rising or falling.
Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.

Hi Amy, We used the internet Travel FX to change some sterling a couple of weeks ago - they were brilliant you have to do a bank transfer of your English money 1st then they send out the Lira recorded delivery we got the rate of 2.50 (no commission or postal charges) but today's rate is standing at 2.54 which is excellent - seems to be rising daily at the moment. I was very sceptical at doing this kind of thing on line but it really was very safe and quite painless. Hope this helps
Chris.

I always use Travelex. Order enough currency on line for your needs (for me it just enough for the first day's cash transactions eg bar bills and other essentials) and pick it up when I get to the airport. Thereafter there are plenty of ATMs in the town.
Travelex exchange rates are pretty competitive I think and as long as you're not late getting to the airport there's no hassle.

If you look at the comparison sites, Travelex at the airport has just about the worst possible exchange rate - they have a captive audience so can offer what they like :P. A report in last year's Which? also put them bottom of the league. Travelex on the high street has a different exchange rate, so just be aware...!

order from Travelex on line in advance to collect at the airport and the rates are very competitive.

Halifax Clarity Credit Card. Got 2.52 a few weeks ago from ATMs when places in Kalkan were offering 2.40 to 2.45.

Simples.

“At the moment, various cards from the likes of Halifax and Santander offer fee-free foreign usage – but again, don’t forget that you shouldn’t use those cards for cash withdrawals.”

Not true with the Halifax Clarity. True you pay interest on the cash you withdraw, but the key is to make a payt to the Credit Card via the internet to cover the cash you have just withdrawn, which will mitigate the interest.
