Title: New Istanbul airport
Post by: Haybo on April 12, 2019, 11:38:46 AM
Hi all - I understand Turkish Airlines have moved all of their flights to the new airport.  Has any one gone via there yet?

I travel via Istanbul in 7 weeks and would appreciate any advice on transfer times etc - I know the old airport could be a bit squeaky on time as domestic and international terminals were a bit of a walk from each other

Thanks in anticipation!

It looks very nice...All the major airlines have now moved from Ataturk airport...it is due to be fully completed in 2027 at which point it will carry 200 million passengers per year It is projected to cost 7 Billion Euros (it has also cost 1.5 million plus trees)
and is also on course to be the largest Airport in the world. 6 times the area of Heathrow with 6 runways and 4 terminals..most of the planes are at remote stands and people are saying it can take 25 + mins taxying around...The new terminal is vast and  passengers are saying it takes 25/30 min to get from one end to the other .It is located 30 kilometres north of Istanbul in Amuavutkoy district.
google it for a more in depth report the Guardian report seems the best or good old wikipedia ;)

We are travelling via Istanbul in just under 4 weeks time. We have about 3 1/2 hrs between flights so should be able to get through immigration, have a look round and get to our gate without stress. I'll try and post an update when we're in Kalkan.
Had to cancel our original flights and re-book though as we would normally have travelled out on the 5pm from Gatwick, stayed overnight at a hotel close to Ataturk and then got the 2nd flight of the day to Dalaman, but there don't seem to be many hotels close enough to the new airport to be able to do that now.

Update on travelling via new Istanbul Airport.

On arrival took about 20 mins from touch down to arriving at gate. Couldn't see any directions for Domestic Transfer so ended up going through Immigration, out past baggage reclaim and exit, turned left and back through Domestic Departures to "A" gates. Getting through Immigration was much quicker than the the old Ataturk Airport though. Not sure if there was an Immigration desk for Domestic Transfers if we'd have walked along past the Immigration desks.

Coming back we were bussed from the plane (presume the plane was then going to do an International flight). On entry into the building clearly signed International Transfers.

Although the airport seems very impressive, don't look too close as typical Turkish workmanship (cracked tiles, locks not working in some toilets). Seems to be a lack of seating in departure lounges as many people have several hours wait between flights and those seats were quite dirty. Seats at the gates are hard plastic so not very comfy. Also lack of rubbish bins but there are some small recycling bins. Some of the signage is very confusing but there are loads of screens for checking your flights.

I'd say you'd need a minimum of 90 mins for your connecting flight.
