Now living in Marsden, West Yorkshire having moved recently from Greater Manchester.
Originally from Harpenden, Hertfordshire but now (almost) a proper Northerner!
-
From Crowthorne, near Reading - again not far from Gatwick for those ever important escapes to Paradise aka Kalkan...of course what do I consider first and second home....I would love to consider kalkan as first home but not practical at this time in my life
-
We''re from Biggin Hill in Kent
-
Sunny Motherwell. a town midway between Edinburgh and Glasgow
-
We are in Cardigan on the beautiful West Wales coast. If only we had the Kalkan sun and warm sea we wouldn''t need to go to Turkey! Holiday makers have looked pretty miserable here this summer.
-

We too are near rochester in kent....but hopefully for not toooooo long! We bought in Kalkan in 2004 and are making plans to relocate in the not too distant future....Where exactly are you?
-
Pevensey - East Sussex - handy for Gatwick ;D

Ah, if only I knew where I was "from" ... half my life spent abroad. Born in Minnesota, grew up in Arizona, Pennsylvania, California, married in New York, had babies in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Accra, Ghana. Matured in Rome, Italy for 15 years, ripened in southern France, aged in Boston, retired in Turkey. In between spent lots of time in Morocco. So where am I from? Minnesota? USA? Never know how to answer this question!
-
Hi Cosetta that all sounds fab, you certainly have seen a lot of the world. Can I ask why you decided to settle in Kalkan?? Are you saying it was the best out of all these places................and sorry hope you don''t think I''m being nosey!
-
I''m from Leicestershire in the East Midlands.
-
Settled here, Charlie, because when we drove along the coast from Antalya to Izmir in 1990, my husband-to-be and I fell in love with Kalkan which reminded me of a small coastal town in northern Morocco where I had spent 13 entire summers plus some odd months. My husband proposed to me at the terrace bar of the old Pirat hotel, but it wasn''t until 1995 that we returned and bought a timeshare in Club Patara. Subsequently built a house here. But my first love is perhaps still Italy. Why we didn''t buy there is a bit more complicated.
-
St albans Hertfordshire-ONLY 8 DAYS TILL I''M BACK TO PARADISE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Born in Manchester, schooled in Westhoughton (nr Bolton), then moved to work and live in Bolton and Radcliffe (near Bury).
Then met MrB and gave up the glamorous Lancashire lifestyle to live in sunny Barnsley, South Yorkshire.
Plenty in geographical common with joanH and janeywhit, not quite so geographically exciting as Cosetta!
-
Thanks Cosetta, very romantic - lovely!
-
I''m from brighton too!!
-
We are from Weston Super Mare(raining at the moment)
-
Well, I''m originally from Liverpool, but now adopted Welsh - you''re not alone Honey! My Better Half is Welsh and we bought some land and built our house in a village called Hawarden (famous for William Gladstone and Michael Owen). We had planned to build again on the Isle of Anglesey, but Kalkan looks like a far better place to retire... ;D
-
Cosetta
I do hope you are coming to our meet on the 20th? You sound really interesting (not that everyone else doesn''t)
-
Doncaster, South Yorkshire and only 3 miles from the airport - very handy!
-
We hope to come barring unforeseen events.
-
As my name suggests, Chorley, a town in Lancashire, quite central, about 9 miles from Bolton, Wigan, Preston and Blackburn.
For the Welsh, yes, Wales is great, I always go there for hols, staying in Rowen a lovely little village near Conwy on Sept 29th for a week in a fantastic farm cottage, great location, but as already commented on, pity about the weather, but I recall sunning myself on Harlech beach October 2005! And what a view that is from the viewpoint adjacent to the imposing castle there.
Cardigan Bay is stunning as mentioned previously, we were in another farm cottage in Aberystwyth in June, great place. Sorry, sounds like an advertisement for Wales here!! ;D
-
Us Southern softies are thin on the ground, most of you, my forum buddies are from up north!
-
come on surely more than one scottish kalkan lover out there???????????????
-
We are use to fell walking!!!
-
Do we have any members from Ireland? We seem to have covered England, Scotland and Wales....
-
Yeah that would be me then! From the north of this beautiful island and we have a few friends who visit Kalkan from the south. Not too many of us about Kalkan.......................
-
My husband & I both work in Manchester but live in Bolton.
Ann
-
Crikey, the North West has to be the most popular region on the forum!!! ;)
-
It just goes to show that we have good taste!!!
-
It sure does show something....maybe us southern softies simply can''t afford to buy or holiday in Kalkan or else the weather is worse up north so you guys need your fair share of sunshine...mind you - after this summer I think that applies to even us southern softies..... :o Whatever the reasons...it is very interesting....so if we want a Kalkan re-united gathering in the UK...does that mean me venturing north of the ''gap'' :o :o :o :o
-
Hey....we are even further up North near ''Pink Panther'' country (Durum..durum..durum.durum..durum etc..) Durham! So..yes this summer weather drives us back to Kalkan whenever possible and not long to go now guys..2 weeks today. Planning starts this weekend...what to take, we have a wedding present for one of our turkish friends to sort, it''s hubbies birthday while we are there, our wedding anniversary, my brother''d b''day, sisters b''day and my fathers 80th the evening before we go!! We are booked into Lumley Castle, so if any of you guys fancy a visit to this region, this castle is fantastic as a venue. Next to a golf course, fab rooms, great restaurant and near Durham, Newcastle and the Metrocentre. Hopefully we won''t be too hungover the next day for travelling!
-
Hey KislaBlue, off to Bolton tomorrow to see my mum, do some shopping and catch up with friends...I will wave in the general direction of any Kalkan vibes i get in case its you!! :)
-
kim...would your wedding present be for Erol by any chance? ;)
-
We have a turkish wedding to go to in October - any advice on what to buy as a wedding present..??? ???
-
Born in London, lived in Singapore, The Phillipines. Indonesia, Hong Kong and Australia. Put deposit on house in rural France on a Saturday, came to Kalkan for first time (1999) on the Sunday and bought apartments here on the Wednesday. Cancelled purchase of French house (no regrets).
Started to build a house out of the village in 2001, completed in 2002. Now look down at all the new development in amazement but we are still surrounded by olive groves and pasture land and our sea views are completely uninterrupted.
Have sold our UK home and plan to be here until we are too old to climb the hills - hopefully another 20 years.
Lantana
-
Just be warned Felicity - it is true - we all wear flat caps and talk funny. It permanently rains here and when we go out of a night we don''t wear coats - unless its reeeally snowing! ;D
-
do you have a whippet? ;D
-
No - a pit bull terrier!! ;D
-
Mind it doesn''t eat your ferret!!
-
No that''s safe - it''s down my partners trousers to keep him warm on our long, cold, dark days!
-
Lantana, our first idea was also France or Italy but somehow it got switched to Kalkan! Maybe because at the time we did not have the liquid funds to purchase the apt we wanted in Vence, couldn''t decide where we wanted to live in Italy, and we had only enough money for this land and to start building a house here. I still wouldn''t mind having a little something, even shared, somewhere in France or Italy.
Are you up near Peter and Joanie on the Berzigan road?
-
There are lots of Irish here apparently, our neighbors are Irish but they don''t come often and keep to themselves. There is another Irish family who bought a villa from Samira Deluxe, and I''m told there are several more. Of course, if I can refer back to my great-grandparents, then I''m one of them too!
-
Ahhh everyone wants to be one of them Cosetta! Yes there are a few of us who have bought in Kalkan and we all probably all ''kind of'' know one another. It''s just when you hear the accent, which is very different to the other UK ones we hear so many of (and no offence to any of you English/Scottish/Welsh people!) you do notice it! And just for the record I don''t know too many who keep themselves to themselves, we''re usually rather loud!
-
Hmmm ... if you ''kind of'' know most of the Irish here, then WHO are our elusive neighbors? (villa in Kiziltas, built by Mahmoud of the Islamlar fish restaurant, just in front of the other American family who live on this hill)? They come and go so silently I don''t realize when they''re here. As for the accent, I could not tell one from another ! Will be interesting if I ever succeed in completing the family tree to find out where in the UK and in Ireland my ancestral blood flows from.
-
Hi Blue Lizard, no the wedding gift is for Sherafa from the shoe shop on the main street who gets married in October (is this your wedding Felicity?) but we are unable to go unfortunately, hubbie has to be in the Middle East just after we get back from Kalkan, so :( a real pity cos we have known her for almost 12 years and would have been great to have gone....Maybe I could sneak back......
-
Hi Kim - no not her - it is Yusuf who looks after our villa - any ideas on what to buy for a pressie?? And yes - why don''t you just sneak back by yourself - I would if I were you..as it''s half term - all the family are coming otherwise I would have gone by myself!! :D
-
Hi Mrs B
Hope you had good day in Bolton and didn''t spend too much shopping - even the sun is shining now. Just returned from work in Manchester and logged on to forum for my daily fix of Kalkan gossip. It make me feel nearer some how or is that just wishful thinking!! Only came back from Kalkan last Saturday and already counting the days till end of October when we return with some friends who have never been there and I am really excited as I know they will love it.

Hi Felicity, I deliberated over a prezzie, because transporting glass / crystal can be a bit tricky, so went to one of these specialist shops called Collectables, where you can get really nice carved, marble figures, so I got a nice contemporary white figure of a wedding couple....all smooth and carved out of one piece.. A good safe option I think cos you don''t know what other''s tastes can be, so I stuck to a very simple piece which I hadn''t seen another like and probably not in the least bit Turkish! Not too heavy either and carefully boxed!
-
Thanks Kim - I''ll bear that in mind - i think I definitely need to buy something ''non turkish''..but not too twee...!!
Cheers!
-
Traditionally a wedding ''gift'' is money - which is pinned to the bride and groom after the ceremony. Depending on the size of the wedding party they can gather upwards of 5000 YTL which goes towards helping them create their marital home. Of course this removes the risk of buying something that is not to their taste, although I''m sure that a present would be gratefully received (particularly if you are unable to attend the ceremony in person).

Hiya KislaBlue...had a great day in Bolton in the sunshine, though i had a shock when i saw them knocking down the old bingo hall/cinema near the market!
You''re so lucky to be going back to Kalkan in October...we have to wait till next June :(
Have a great time and enjoy all the things we all know and love so much out there! :)
-
I know what you mean Mrs B, I did not realise they were knocking down the Odean. It was a fantastic art deco building and I have fond memories of going there. My earliest memory is going with my parents and two brothers as my Dad wanted to see Spartacus, we could not all sit together as a family as it was so full. We children sat across the aisle from my parents and I caused havoc when i started sobbing inconsolably during the chariot race!!!! I also went with my mum to watch South Pacific, it was our first "girls night out"!!!, and on my first "date".
-
No, I''m Spartacus!
-
Aww JoanH...what fantastic memories of such a lovely building!
I got a lump in my throat as i saw it from behind yesterday and the machines were knocking it all over the place...seemed disrespectful for a building that has been there for so many years and brought so much pleasure to people...tho i''m not sure how they would ''respectfully'' knock it down!
I think i first went in there as a youngster to watch a film just before it closed and became a bingo hall...then i went in many times to meet up with friends mums during bingo sessions for a free lemonade!
Ah....memories!!
-
I have been looking at web sites about Turkish weddings (yes, I also have been invited to Errols wedding on 20th Oct) and it''s not strictly true that the ''normal'' gift is money, it''s actually a gold coin. Clearly that is beyond most people''s budget and innapropriate as a ''friend'' rather than close family.
My friends and I are still mulling over what to buy but probably something ''English'' (sorry, no offence meant to the Scots).
Anyway, I can''t afford to be offended about where I live .....it''s Essex (but hoping to make it Kalkan soon)
-

Hi Turkeyfan - West kirby - by the marina, how about you?

Hi Blondie,
We''re from Prenton.
You will really enjoy Kalkan. The Nur is in a good position - just a short walk from the village and very near the market on a Thursday - great if you like "genuine fakes".

Brighton Marina is not quite the same as Kalkan Bay though - Oh how I miss Kalkan :) :)
-

I was born in Bletchley(now absorbed by Milton Keynes) but moved to Peterborough with work 26 years ago and am presently living in Whittlesey in the District of Fenland. Because of the nature of my work, I have visited just about all the places mentioned on here in England, including Rustington.

-
Know what you mean BL, Fareham west St just hasn''t got the same feel.

Hello I am from Rochdale but have lived allover the world since I was 21, now settled in Widnes in Cheshire with a home just outside Florence and have just become the proud owner of an apartment in Kalkan. I think I may be the new girl on the block (am I still a girl) in spirit. Love this site

Loughton in Essex ;D
-
Welcome Sue and singinjo!!!
-
Originally from Buckinghamshire, lived in Ashford, Kent in the late seventies, London (and again Bucks) in the eighties, bounced around Europe for a couple of years, moved to Geneva in 1992.
And no, I''m not planning on ''going home'' - I''m already here!
-
Welcome Vieux con, nice to have a continental touch to the forum. I spent some months living and travelling around Germany and Switzerland. The air definitely smells sweeter in Switzerland!!! I mainly visited the German cantons, but did get to have a wonderful meal and overnight stay in Geneva. The views and scenery were stunning, don''''t blame you for staying there.
-
My OH''s family live in a town called Thonon-Les-Bains on Lake Geneva which is beautiful but on the French side of Lake Geneva. It sure is a different environment than some of the UK towns and villages! Picture postcard beautiful with magical christmases and boy do they have good food and wine! Lovely place to live though expensive!
-
Hi Kim,
Thonon is indeed blessed with a lovely setting, and plenty of good eateries. It tends to be overshadowed by it''s better known neighbour Evian, but all the better for us locals. It used to have an ''authentic'' Indian restaurant, sadly that closed about 8 years ago. When will the French learn to appreciate proper food? Ha!
-
Was born in Chiswick, spent most of my life in Woking, but when my parents retired we moved to Lyme Regis in Dorset.
But most of the time I''m in Brighton!!
-
Hiya turkey fan,Im from bury in lancs, home of the black puddin. :P

-
We are from the land of Wedgewood and Doulton
-
Originally Manchester then spent the last 5 years in High Peak, Derbyshire and now Permanent residents in Akbel...
-
We are from Wigan in Lancashire. Home of the pie eaters!!!!!!!!!! Can''t wait until 23 days time when we will be back in Kalkan for our first visit of 2008 - the thought of sitting on our terrace, looking at the view of the bay & village sipping an Angora red, debating which restaurant to visit & anticipating a lovely meal is bliss.
-
We''re from a very hilly village in Mid Glam, South Wales, so HOPEFULLY the Kalkan hills won''t be TOO daunting for us and we can always get some training in trudging up the hills around here before we go. Mind you we don''t have the hills and the heat to cope with here just the wind and rain normally! Roll on June! Warm sunshine, cool drinks and fantastic views, can''t wait!! ;D
-
I thought I would bring this thread up again so all our new members can tell us where they are from.
Joan
-
I was brought up in Kent but we now live in Marlow in "leafy" Buckinghamshire. (Why do they always call it "leafy" Buckinghamshire? Admittedly it''s not exactly a concrete jungle but there are more picturesque places I can think of). Still, it''s pleasant enough. Damned expensive though. ^-^
-
:-* East Anglia on the Essex/Suffolk border ,but was born and brought up deep in the heart of Suffolk. ;)
-
New Malden in Surrey but was born and brought up in Wimbledon. So a London girl. I lived in central London during the sixties which was great fun. Pauline
-
Kings Lynn in Norfolk, on the east coast of England with some very beautiful beaches.

-
mr & mrs fidimax, both born in Bury,Lancs, and still here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
8) >:D
-
Small world, I didn''t imagine there would be anyone else from Kings Lynn on here as it''s such a small town, it''s quite a nice town really, lots of history, the old parts of the town is nice & the new marina area, it''s one of the few places left in the UK where crime is still quite low.
I''m a norfolk girl born & bread, don''t drive a tractor though! ;D
-
Hey Fidimax...I used to live in Radcliffe and work in Bolton, till Mr B enticed me to Yorkshire a year an a half ago! :D
Bury market and black pudding stalls...yuuummm!! >:D
-
John, I may have moved more than you did before settling in Kalkan. How about this? Minnesota -> Arizona -> Pennsylvania -> California -> New York -> Addis Ababa, Ethiopia -> Accra, Ghana -> Tangier, Morocco -> Rome, Italy -> Marina Baie des Anges, France -> Mandelieu -> Boston, MA -> Kalkan, now shared with Ojén, Spain.
-
Iam from Barrhead/Glasgow and Cheryl is from Newbury Park Essex.Sounds really crap after Cosetta!!!
-
In a bid for an honourable second place behind Cosetta:
Born Enfield, Middlesex (now the London Borough of Enfield, so I could claim to be a Londoner), then up the road to Waltham Cross, Herts, then The Hague in the Netherlands, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Hanoi in Vietnam, back to Hoddesdon in Herts, then Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, Hoddesdon again, Prague in the Czech Republic and Broxbourne, Herts, with every chance of living somewhere called Kalkan, apparently in Turkey from next Spring. Mrs is from Antalya and once lived in Hackney, Croydon and Golders Green.
Just think what that trip would have cost in a Kalkan taxi? Good job it was primarily at the taxpayer''s expense. I love you all.
-
Hi we live right on the staffs cheshire border, we had magnificent views for thirty years over looking the cheshire plains with the welsh mountains in the background, that untill the year 2000, we had new neighbours, they started to plant trees, more trees, and more trees, now eight years later we have no views at all, they still have theire sunny garden and buitiful sun sets, we have lost all that, why ho; why are some people so selfish and inconsiderate.
But we still have our lovley Kalkan with our lovley views.
-
Hubby is a Kiwi, born in Wellington New Zealand. I am from the Emerald Isle, born and lived in the Dingle Peninsula in West Kerry. We now live in Esher in Surrey. We both love the mountains and sea and Kalkan is just perfect.
KK(Mr&Mrs)
-
From a smallish town called Belper in Derbyshire. The lovely peak district is on our doorstep, so not a bad place to live. Very envious of Cosetta living in Roma, how I envy you. Am still struggling to learn the beautiful language. Although I have a feeling Kalkan may become that special place. Roll on the 24th Aug.
-
HI Cosetta when and where did you live in rome i lived there from 1967 to 1985. Would be interested to know. Pauline
-
Pauline, I lived in Rome from 1971-1986. First lived in San Saba, near FAO, later Mostacciano near EUR. Left there having almost forgotten English. Worked in Italian. Still my favorite country.

My better half was born in Ontario, Canada, but moved to Scotland when she was 8yrs old, so has dual nationality.
Looking forward to being in Kalkan in 3 weeks time, as the Scottish "summer" has been of the usual standard - rubbish!!
-
Here in sodden Lanarkshire we''ve got flooding. Roads closed, rivers/streams burst their banks and people being rescued by boat. Oh those lazy hazy crazy days of a Scottish summer ::)

Gary, I used to live in Ashdown Drive, what a small world. I think you must have met your wife in a pub called the Grass Hopper, which was then renamed Hoppers and is now called The Gate.

We hail from West Chiltington in West Sussex.
I was born and grew up in Sutton Surrey.
Pauline, my lovely wife Chris was born and lived in New Malden. She went to Coombe girls school and lived in Overdale Avenue. I used to get the 213 bus from Sutton to go and see her! We got married in the C of E church in New Malden High Street in 1971 and had our reception at The Plough in Worcester Park. Is the go kart track still down the lane at the side of the Plough? So many happy memories. Regards, Allan. 8)

Just back from our first visit to Kalkan.
We had an interesting time and may come back next year, so decided to stop lurking and join the website.
-
Hello Bigbird
Glad you took the plunge, if you've hovered about on the borders for a bit, you'll already know that this is a great place to keep your Kalkan memories going that little bit longer ...
if you've got any Kalkan memories of your first visit that you'd like to share ... we'd like to hear them!
Cheers
Lorilou
-
Hi Bigbird
Glad you enjoyed Kalkan and joined this forum.
We are one from Preston and one from Longridge.
Malc knows someone with the nickname Bigbird and was wondering if it is you. If so, you would be a lady in your fifties.
M n M
-
Or A huge Yellow bird off Sesame Street? ::)
-
Hi
Thankfully I am not (at least for a good few years yet) 50 or yellow. However, I am a 6ft3 redhead with a lively dress sense, so the Bigbird nickname was more or less inevitable.
I will get around to writing up my thoughts about our trip, although having to compete with the likes of Antler is a bit off putting as I don't quite have either his descriptive skills or fabulous glass is completely full (no in fact its self filling and overflowing) outlook on life.
-
Noooo BigBird - your writing skills are great! I can almost hear your voice as I read ... and want to hear more. So when you get a chance to catch your breath, let's have it, warts and all.
Cheers for now

Fidimax you live closer to the Black Pudding origin now, than you did before (or so I believe) Jack Morris from Whipple tree farm Westhoughton is the Black Pudding Company master. Hi,
I live in Brighton, which can be lovely. In fact I think that due to the fact it has the sea, beaches and restaurants it needs to be twinned with Kalkan - and I volunteer to be the local ambassador! ;D

We are looking to buy a highchair for our villa "Villa Sienna" in Kiziltas. My husband is in Kalkan at the moment but as most places are closed he tried Kas but still couldn't find a highchair - will he have to go to Fethiye ?

New to the forum but just love it. I am from Inverness in the Scottish Highlands - not at all handy for Heathrow! A trip to Kalkan involves a flight to Gatwick, transfer to Heathrow and an overnight stay there before flying the next day. the same happens on return in reverse. We love Kalkan so much this does not put us off and we are returning for the 9th time in May!
-
Another one from London.

Suzyq we've flown many times from both Glasgow and Edinburgh to Dalaman. We're much closer to both than you though but still would be easier than London?
Have used Thomas Cook, Onur Air, Thomsons amongst others. Onur air for us in July but have booked with Jet2 for September
-
Thanks its time, the other problem is we have always chosen to travel with Exclusive Escapes who no longer fly from Scotland. As from next year we hope to travel to Kalkan more frequently and independently and will use all the flight advise we have been given.
