Title: Cost of living in Kalkan/Turkey
Post by: kensarrived on August 31, 2010, 07:42:39 PM
Hi all Kalkan residents, we really need your help. I've looked for a thread without success so forgive me if I have missed a previously answered question on the same topic. My wife and I are looking to buy a property and retire to Kalkan within the next 12 to 24 months.

As we have only visited Kalkan as tourists we haven't a clue about the cost of living e.g. are there council rates, cost of utilities, pool upkeep etc. I hear stories that there are two prices, one for residents and one for tourists, is that so? and if true what is an average weekly food bill (leaving out the Beluga Caviar)etc. are there any hidden costs?

A ball park monthly figure would be great to go on without anyone divulging personal secrets. We would really appreciate your feedback.
Looking forward to replies.
Ken

Would love some general info on this thread!  We're moving out in a few years and wondering what the general costs are etc...

It is not really possible to ever answer this sort of question
It's like me asking what it costs to live in the UK or Australia - impossible to answer
Do you have a big house , small house, run a car, have a Residency or use visas, health insurance or pay as you go, indulge yourself food and drinkwise - travel around ...................etc etc
Unless you can be specific, don't expect anything that will really tell you anything realistic to base your future life here on
All you really need here are a property, a reasonable income and cash in the bank

Sorry Kevincat99, I forgot to say "in comparison to the UK"  which made it appear a silly question.
Say for instance I owned a 2 bed apartment.  How do the general bills ie: rates, power, Gas and Water compare to the UK?

Well, we have a 2 bed apartment, and we find the cost of living lower than the UK. I agree that it depends on your lifestyle to some degree (e.g if you're a clean freak, and use your washing machine, or if you have air con in every room, and use it all the time, then obviously your electric bills will be way higher than someone who doesn't!) but overall I do think the cost of living is less. Electricity is the most expensive utility - we find our bills about the same, or maybe slightly less than the UK - 150 - 300TL per mth. Gas loads cheaper, as it's bottled, and we only use this for the gas rings on our cooker (about 40TL every 2 month) Water v cheap - our last bill, which I think was quarterly was 70TL. All singing/dancing internet connection 69TL per month (but you can pay much less if you don't want unlimited usage) Telephone line about 20 TL per month. TV package about 50 TL per month. NB - watch out for mobile costs, more expensive than the UK, add on half again for normal usage. Also mobile much more expsnive to buy out here. Shopping in supermarkets is not cheap, and meat is v expensive right now, but if you shop at the market every week for your fruit, veg, cheese etc, and don't eat too much meat, then you can keep your food costs to a reasonable level.
Anyway, hope that helps a little....

Thanks for the info.  Gives us a good idea what to expect when we buy. :)
