Jewelers
« on: August 26, 2016, 10:04:54 AM »
Hi all. Has anyone had jewellery repaired in KALKAN? I have a gold chain that has a broken catch, my local jeweller has already repaired it twice in just over two years so I'm loathe really to go back and he's not particularly cheap. Sentimental value so would like to take it away. Wondering where in KALKAN is the best to go and not too dear. Also I have two watches that need batteries and have to be replaced by a jeweller don't know whether to get it done here or would it be better to wait and have them done out there. Problems, problems Just glad that's all I have to worry about!!

You'll probably get a stronger catch in Turkey than the UK, as they value their jewellery more than UK Jewellers. (see: Ratner >:D)

Where to go?  Good question, take your pick, though I can say from experience that Infinity will do it, and, if you're a regular visitor, they will check the condition for you each visit.

Watch batteries, same thing, depends on the watch, but the sealing is the real question, then how old is the battery they're putting in. ;D.  In the latter case, someone who does lots of battery changes, so they have newer stock, and expertise to remove case backs without damaging seals.  I should imagine any of the decent jewellers, in preference to the 'man on the market'.

For the watches it depends if you need a service and/or pressure seal check with battery & what brand they are.  When I've had my Tag Heuer done I've sent it away here to watch specialists very successfully & MUCH cheaper than makers prices !

If you want to use Kalkan check the jeweller is an official outlet for your brand but I like Yardans service.

However for a fastener replacement on a gold wrist chain I took it to Ramo (below Mussaka a few doors down) & new lobster claw in gold, check of a second chain cost about £30 at the rates of exchange then (125TL) .

For the catch I'd recommend Yardan, know nothing about watch batteries as I stopped wearing one when I retired.

Just about any jeweller in Kalkan would be OK, I would surmise.  It's more about whether they seal the watch correctly after replacement, but this is totally dependent on the watch in question.  If it's a high end watch, send it to the service centre or a reputable horologist.  The average jeweller in the UK knows nothing about watches.

It's also about battery turnover.  A place that does few battery replacements is more likely to have old, stale batteries that won't last long.

If it's a less expensive watch, you could consider getting a tool from Wilkinson or Maplin that will removes the back (about £5), and getting a fresh battery from wherever.  The rest is easy, though the seal issue remains.

Kalkan Regular  re "   know nothing about watch batteries as I stopped wearing one when I retired."

Love it , made me smile and dream of the day when we can throw out our watches and alarm clocks ,  except for checking  flight times of course  -  on the way out!

Brian I always seemed to be living by my watch when I worked and had a range of watches with increasingly larger faces & numbers as the longsighted deteriorated! From the day I finished work I swore I wouldn't wear one and gave them all away. I still sometimes need to know the time & will look at a clock at home (only have 2) or my phone if out. Unless we have to be somewhere and need an alarm we wake when we wake. We have no clock in our Kalkan apartment as I figure people are on holiday so we and guests don't need to be reminded of the time. There is an alarm clock in the bedside drawer should it be needed. It's real liberation and you'll love it.

I have a platinum ring with some diamonds missing that I'm planning to have repaired in Kalkan. I've had some quotes in the UK that I think are very pricey, so thought I'd get someone to look at it when we are there in June. Any recommendations?
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Gozcun, who used to own the clothes shop where Harools is now, opened Melissa Diamond a couple of years ago. He is in partnership with a jewellery maker from Istanbul who designs and makes his own diamond jewellery. They are moving this year to a smaller shop below Kosk and Gozcun is reopening the original shop as a clothes shop. My wife had a diamond and platinum ring made last year. Valued in Hatton Garden at more than twice what we paid. I know that they do repairs for the other diamond jewellers down from Gironda. They are happy to discuss price.
