Pharmacy
« on: August 23, 2016, 09:42:57 PM »
Does anyone know if the pharmacist still prescribes antibiotics over the counter. My husband bought some years back for an infection. Not planning on being ill, fingers and toes crossed but lately I'm prone to nasty chest and sinus infections linked to asthma. My GP sensibly won't prescribe just in case with the ongoing antibiotic worries. Even so I'm still a little concerned picking up things so often and don't want to ruin this much needed break. Sound like an old hypercondriac, Maybe plenty of G&T's will help ward off the nasty bugs, seems to have worked in the past!!

I did read that they no longer did but in March I certainly got some over the counter without a problem.

No they definitely won't sell antibiotics over the counter (without prescription) any longer.  Spain fell into line some years before so seems to have extended outside the EU now.

If you do get poorly go to the clinic on Kalamar Rd & you can see a doctor quite quickly & easily.  In fact the cost is usually so minimal it often isn't worth claiming on your insurance.

Hope it isn't necessary.

Suziq -  surprised to hear that.  I've had no luck last year & heard that from from several others on the forum.

Definitely not, my granddaughter got an ear infection whilst here the chemist wouldn't give any antibiotics , medical centre was closed so had to go to doctor, cost me 100lira for prescription and 100 lira for the medication.Even thought it was for a child and she was in agony on aFruday evening the pharmacy would not give me anything without a prescription.

Thanks everyone for the info. Have to see the nurse before going so will ask her for advice just to put my mind at rest. If I was a mutt they would have put me down ages ago lol!

Other prescription drugs are available over the pharmacy counter without a script. I was able to buy fat feet pills (frusemide) and BH was able to get his strong antihistamines that he has on prescription at home - think the issue is just with antibiotics. Viagra was available though....the new cheeky pharmacist who works out of the chemist opposite Lime Bar kept offering them to us when we popped in - he was really funny ;D

When my son was younger our doctor at home would prescribe antibiotics for ear infections, just in case. We never had to use them so when we came home we took them back to the pharmacy that had given us the prescription. This is going back about 20 years, I am presuming this doesn't happen now?

OH paid 6lira for antibiotic (gentamicin) ear drops last week at the pharmacy. Maybe it's just the tablets/capsules that you have to get on prescription.

Blimey which chemist was that Lizilu, they sold me some drops 1st time but they weren't antibiotic drops so they didn't work .. I shall keep a note of that for future ref .. Bit cheaper than the 200 lira it cost me😱

Oh Chrissy that's awful poor you. It was the one just up from kaya, opposite the butchers and vodaphone shop.  The one with the dodgy ramp. We might just call in and buy more as it's inevitable that one of us will have an ear infection on holiday.  :)

A doctor once told me to wear ear plugs when swimming and showering (especially abroad) and you're unlikely to get ear infections.

As I don'r swim, (unless vacating a sinking vessel, or similar), I can't verify this sage advice!
