Travel safe, pw - and tell us lots more! ( Leeds is dire tonight; grey, angry skies, 28mph winds and heavy storms; worse than winter!)

Well let's just say it's different from Kalkan! Not peaceful, not quiet, not serene. But very interesting.
Did most of the touristy things........but no mosques. ''Twas too hot to wear mosque attire.....long trousers.
Looking forward to being back on "home ground"!

Pity you missed  Sultanahmet(blue mosque) incredible inside as is Hagia Sofia but I suppose once you've seen one.We went  with snow on the ground so I can understand whereyour coming from...(another Mosque is called "Eyup" which I like to imagine was built  by Yorkshire men) ;D..I wouldn't like to be in Istanbul in july/Aug...pheeew! good old kalkan will soon relax you ;)

Grateful for any tips PW as we're spending a few days in Istanbul in September before taking the Pegasus flight (at the huge cost of £16 each incl seat, luggage and sandwich) to Dalaman and Kalkan...

That is probably a good way to visit Istanbul - first the city with all the interesting things to see and do but then go on to Kalkan for relaxation.    Must remember that another year.   I love Istanbul and sometimes thought of combining it with Kalkan.

Enjoy your Kalkan visit and keep us posted.

Most trips in Istanbul miss the Cistern.

Worth the detour - if only to visualise "From Russia With Love" being filmed in there!
Please use "Click to Say Thanks' if you enjoy this Post.  ::)

Yes, the Cistern is very worth a visit.   Doesn't take too long but something quite different.

Sorry we are talking about Istanbul rather than Kalkan but Rachey did ask for any tips.   We have twice had a good meal at Rami Restaurant.   It is just opposite the Blue Mosque.   If you book a table by the window and time your meal with the Light and Sound Show at the Blue Mosque it is a lovely experience.

Back to Kalkan, hope you will be posting when you get back there and are relaxing after a busy city experience.

Basilica Cistern will also feature in the film version of the most recent Dan Brown novel - Inferno. The movie is scheduled for release next year, I understand so filming may not have taken place just yet. Don't want to give anything away for those who have yet to read the book.

Looking forward to your reports, pw

Did Hagia Sofia (used to be a mosque but isn't now so shorts ok) Bascillica Cistern, saw the signs for Eyup Mosque and also thought about it being the Yorkshire mosque! And on the Yorks theme, the Grand Bazzar is quite a lot like Leeds markets. For me the Galata Tower was the highlight with stunning views back across theGolden Horn to Sultanahmet.
To be honest, I wouldn't rush back but I'm pleased we've been and ticked it off the list.

Fantastic city, it's the history of Turkey along with a few other places, try the side streets, that will ve a wake up call. Also a lovely place is Bursa, quieter but so much different.
